The Past Couple of Weeks

It's been a busy few weeks. When Madeleine went to her first doctor's appointment on Monday, June 2, she weighed in at 7 pounds 1 ounce. She was 19 3/4 inches long (she lost an inch after delivery, which is normal due to having a cone head at birth). She was in the 55th percentile for height and head circumference and the 35th percentile for weight. When she went back to the doctor on Monday, June 16, she weighed in at 7 pounds 15 ounces. The doctor says that she should gain approximately 1 ounce per day. So, if you do the math, our daughter is perfect, gaining 14 ounces in 14 days. In addition to being the perfect weight gainer, Madeleine has had a number of firsts this past couple of weeks. She went out to eat three times (okay, her parents ate and she just went along for the ride). She went to the zoo for the first time and she had her first Father's Day.

Here are some pictures from her outings. Here's her first restaurant experience at The Pancake House on Wednesday, June 11.

Here's her first trip to the zoo on Wednesday, June 18. As you can see, Madeleine and the panda both have the same overwhelming reaction to meeting one another: they're both asleep.

Birth song

Based on the recommendations of some friends, Sam created a playlist on my ipod of about 200 various songs she liked. We then brought the ipod and some battery powered speakers into the delivery room for the birth. I set the ipod to randomly shuffle the playlist of songs so we wouldn't know the exact order of the songs as they played. It was pretty interesting trying to guess which song would come next and whether Madeleine would be born to that song. A couple of times Garth Brooks' songs came on, and I was very afraid that one of those would be the baby's birth song.

Luckily for me, she ended up being born to the song Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones. I am a big Stones fan (which is in large part thanks to my sister who is an even bigger Stones fan), and I was quite pleased with the result. After she was born, I researched the song a little bit and found out it was originally written to be a song about Keith Richards not wanting to leave his new infant son to tour with the band, which I thought had a nice meaning for a birth song. Unfortunately, Mick Jagger changed the original lyrics to be about the ending of his relationship with Marianne Faithfull. Nevertheless, it is still a great song to be born to.

And here is a close up of her cute face.

Bath time

We recently gave Madeleine her first bath at home. It went much better than her first bath (which basically meant that she did not scream the entire time). As you can see from the pictures below, she still did not enjoy it, but she did not put up too much of a fuss.

Baby's first walk

The first week at home with Madeleine has gone by quickly. On Wednesday, we took her for her first walk around the neighborhood. Here are some pictures we took to commemorate the event.

Preparations

When we came home from the hospital, we had a table full of supplies and gifts waiting for us. It's crazy how someone so little could require so much stuff.
